Chief of Police

The Murphysboro Police Department prides itself on its proactive approach to keeping Murphysboro safe and secure for our residents and visitors.  The Departments dedication to safety focuses on criminal activity, driving safety, responding to community requests, and partnering with area law enforcement agencies to prevent, reduce or solve crimes.

The Murphysboro Police Department is comprised of 16 full time sworn officers, 2 part time officers, 16 auxiliary officers, 7 full time communications officers, 1 part time communication officer and an animal control officer. These personnel are responsible for the tracking and answering of more than 10,000 calls for service each year.    Included within the sworn ranks are 3 investigators.  Two are tasked with the majority of the City’s criminal complaints while one is assigned to an investigative initiative with other law enforcement agencies to include the US Attorney, DEA, ATF, Jackson County Sheriff Department, Jackson County States Attorney, Union County.  This unit investigates the major crimes in the region and builds cases for prosecution in the state and federal courts.

A community oriented policing program is currently in development.  This program will enable citizens to work closer with the police department to assist in the efforts to deter in, and the reporting of, nuisance complaints, traffic concerns and criminal activity within the city.

The Chief has an open door policy and will eagerly sit down and discuss any issue a citizen may have.  All members of the police department are willing to assist when able to remedy the problems within our community, both real and perceived.  Visibility will increase as our department is once again becoming fully staffed.

Cooperation between law enforcement agencies and the citizens is core to our primary mission and of our sworn duty to serve and protect.  If you would like for someone within the department to speak at your school or civic group, please contact us.  If you have any other questions or concerns, please contact the Murphysboro Police Department at 618-684-5244 or via email at This email address is being protected from spambots.
